4 stars. Glorious. Chailly unravels the music deftly, and our rabble of gold miners crackle and pop under his tireless workmanship. Nowhere has the depiction of whisky tinkling in the glass or the clip-clopping of horse hooves gleamed with such clarity.

New Production! Set in 1850, The Girl of the Golden West was opera’s first “spaghetti western”. Bursting with life, Puccini’s sumptuous music transports us right to the Polka saloon where passions, as well as humanity and brotherhood, triumph. Minnie (Barbara Haveman) is the bar’s manageress, Dick Johnson ( Robert Aronica) is the stranger she falls for. Robert Carsen’s new production promises to be one of this season’s real jewels.

Please note programme change: due to illness, Dutch soprano Barbara Haveman replaces the originally billed Eva-Maria Westbrook as ‘Minnie’ in the La Scala cinema production of La Fanciulla del West.
