  • Exemplary. Lived up to all expectations. Riccardo Chailly conducted the orchestra in a loving, affectionate reading of the score. An explosion of sound and fury, enough to make your hair stand on end.

Opera in four acts (1865 critical edition, with “Mal per me che m’affidai” inserted from the 1847 edition)

New Production! Palace Opera & Ballet is once again delighted to present the gala opening of the new opera season at La Scala - the biggest event in the Italian musical calendar.

This year, Musical Director Riccardo Chailly completes the series of interpretations of Giuseppe Verdi’s “youthful trilogy” (after ‘Giovanna d’Arco’ and ‘Attila’) with Macbeth, the composer’s magnificent opera on Shakespeare’s tragedy.

Staged by visionary director Davide Livermore, with Giò Forma’s stage designers and costumes by Gianluca Falaschi, the grand cast is led by Anna Netrebko and Luca Salsi as the murderous Macbeths, alongside Francesco Meli as Macduff and Ildar Abdrazakov as Banco.

The live, prime-time broadcast in Italy was a spectacular success, with over 2.64 million people tuning in.

La Scala

Milan's famous Teatro alla Scala was inaugurated on 3 August 1778. Apart from its sheer beauty and size, La Scala's acoustics are said to be perfect. One of the leading opera and ballet theatres in the world, the venue is home to the La Scala Theatre Chorus, La Scala Theatre Ballet and La Scala Theatre Orchestra, as well as the La Scala Theatre Academy.
