ROYAL OPERA HOUSE
NOV 25, 26, 27 & 30
Adriana Lecouvreur unites a stellar cast under the baton of Mark Elder, in a new production by David McVicar, of an opera not seen at the Royal Opera House since 1906. Anyone who loves Puccini will find this opera by Francesco Cilea, a contemporary and fellow Italian, just as rich, melodious and romantic. Its title role has long been associated with star sopranos, and this production is no exception with Angela Gheorghiu singing opposite Jonas Kaufman as Maurizio. The story of jealous rivalry in love is set between two worlds of the theatre and the aristocracy, and this production brings the 18th-century atmosphere to life in rich historical detail. Against this backdrop, the fictional version of the life of the real and famous actress Adrienne Lecouvreur is played out to its final and deadly conclusion. With the combination of a wonderful score, world-leading cast and exciting production team, this is an unmissable event indeed.
DIRECTOR: David McVicar
CAST: Angela Gheorghiu, Iain Paton, Jonas Kaufmann, David Soar, Olga Borodina, Janis Kelly, Alessandro Corbelli, Sarah Castle, Maurizio Muraro, Bonaventura Bottone

ROYAL OPERA HOUSE
DEC 16, 17, 18 & 21
Powerful music, a gripping story and a tragic end: Puccini's ever-popular Tosca performed at the Royal Opera House with a fabulous cast. Among the star singers in this revival are Angela Gheorghiu, Jonas Kaufmann and Bryn Terfel. The Royal Opera Chorus and The Orchestra of the Royal Opera House are under the baton of Antonio Pappano, Music Director of the Royal Opera for a score that includes such great set pieces as the Act I 'Te Deum' and the arias 'Vissi d'arte' and 'E lucevan le stelle'. Jonathan Kent's detailed production draws to the full on the historical backdrop of Rome in 1800, a political world of control and suspicion, beautifully evoked in Paul Brown's lavish designs. The pageantry of church ritual, the darkness of a brooding study with its hidden torture chamber and the false optimism of the light of a Roman dawn – all throw into relief the love of the beautiful diva Tosca, the idealism of her lover Cavaradossi and the deadly, destructive obsession of the malevolent Chief of Police, Scarpia. Drama, passion and fabulous music – Tosca is one of opera's great nights out.
DIRECTOR: Duncan Macfarland
CAST: Angela Gheorghiu, Hubert Francis, Jonas Kaufmann, ZhengZhong Zhou, Bryn Terfel, Jeremy White, Lukas Jakobski

THE ROYAL BALLET
JAN 27, 28, 29 & FEB 1
First staged in St Petersburg in 1890, The Sleeping Beauty is the pinnacle of classical ballet: a perfect marriage of Petipa's choreography and Tchaikovsky's music and a glorious challenge for every dancer onstage. It is also The Royal Ballet's signature work. To mark the Company's 75th birthday in 2006, Monica Mason and Christopher Newton revitalized its landmark 1946 production, which re-established Petipa's choreography, as recorded by Imperial Ballet régisseur Nicholas Sergeyev, to a scenario and staging developed by Ninette de Valois herself. With Oliver Messel's gorgeous original designs wonderfully re-imagined by Peter Farmer, and additional choreography by Anthony Dowell, Christopher Wheeldon and Frederick Ashton, today's Sleeping Beauty not only captures the mood of the original but shows that this is very much a living work for The Royal Ballet, growing and changing with the Company while celebrating its past.

THE ROYAL OPERA
JAN 6, 7, 8 & 11
For the first time ever, The Royal Opera presents the story of Cinderella as told in Massenet's opera Cendrillon. The production, new to the Royal Opera House, is by Laurent Pelly, whose previous work here has included the spectacularly successful La Fille du régiment, a heart-warming L'elisir d'amore and last Season's stylish new Manon. Pelly brings his characteristic lightness of touch, wit and elegance to Massenet's delightfully tuneful score against sets and costumes of fairytale charm. Joyce DiDonato takes the title role, with Alice Coote – just like the Principal Boy familiar from British pantomime – as her Prince Charming. And there has of course to be a fairy godmother, played by Eglise Guttiérez, in this version of a tale that gained particular popularity from the published fairytales of Frenchman Charles Perrault. Musical highlights include the fairy godmother's airy coloratura, the orchestral dances of the ball, the March of the Princesses, and of course rapturous duets between the Prince and Cendrillon. French music specialist Bertrand de Billy is the conductor for an opera of radiance and charm.
DIRECTOR: Laurent Pelly
CAST: Joyce DiDonato, Eglise Guttiérez, Alice Coote
APPROX DURATION: 2 hours 19 minutes (excluding intervals)
OPERA AUSTRALIA
FEB 10, 11, 12 & 15, 2012
Göran Järvefelt's 1991 Don Giovanni is a stylish, timeless production, and although many singers have played the title role, no one has inhabited it as memorably as Teddy Tahu Rhodes. Mozart paints the light and shade of his character brilliantly. Sung in Italian with English subtitles.
DIRECTOR: Göran Järvefelt
CAST: Teddy Tahu Rhodes, Daniel Sumegi, Conal Coad, Rachelle Durkin, Henry Choo, Jacqueline Dark, Andrew Jones, Amy Wilkinson, Australian OPERA & BALLET ORCHESTRA, OPERA AUSTRALIA CHORUS.
APPROX DURATION: 130 mins (plus intermission)
ROYAL OPERA HOUSE
MARCH 9, 10, 11 & 14
This is The Royal Opera's first complete presentation of Puccini's Il trittico since 1965.Leading director Richard Jones staged his witty, darkly comic realization of Gianni Schicchi for The Royal Opera in 2007, and here he completes the trio. Royal Opera Music Director Antonio Pappano will conduct. Il trittico ('the triptych'), unveiled at the Metropolitan Opera, New York, in 1918, represented an operatic departure. Instead of a single evening-length narrative, Puccini offered three contrasting one-act works. Il trittico reached Covent Garden in 1920, but has rarely been performed there complete.

THE ROYAL BALLET
APRIL 13, 14, 15 & 18
Romeo and Juliet was Kenneth MacMillan's first full-evening ballet, and, from its premiere in 1965, has been one of The Royal Ballet's signature works, popular all over the world. At the beginning of the ballet MacMillan's crowd scenes teem with life and colour. It's a pleasure to be able to follow the characters created by members of the corps de ballet as they portray the townspeople, market traders and servants of the rival Montagues and Capulets. However, once Romeo and Juliet meet, everything else on stage can only be scenery for their story. Three great pas de deux: the meeting in the ballroom, the balcony scene and the morning after the wedding, eloquently convey the narrative: adolescent shyness and fascination; the headlong rush of love declared, and the grief of parting. The final scene in the tomb, a pas de deux with a lifeless partner, is devastating. The Royal Ballet has performed Romeo and Juliet well over 400 times, yet each performance is subtly different. Every pairing in the title roles brings fresh nuances to the young lovers' characters, while the wealth of supporting roles, from the exuberant trio of harlots in the town square to the murderous rage of Tybalt, offers scope for dancers throughout the Company. Nicholas Georgiadis's earthy Renaissance designs, with some of the original details recently restored, are the perfect backdrop.

IN RIGOLETTO, VERDI CHARTS THE FATE OF HIS LARGER-THAN-LIFE CHARACTERS – THE TORMENTED JESTER TRYING TO AVENGE HIMSELF ON HIS HEARTLESS PLAYBOY EMPLOYER THE DUKE OF MANTUA, WHO HAS CARELESSLY SEDUCED RIGOLETTO'S INNOCENT DAUGHTER GILDA – IN MUSIC OF IMMENSE THEATRICAL PUNCH AND INSTANT MEMORABILITY. BASED ON VICTOR HUGO'S CONTROVERSIAL PLAY, LE ROIS'AMUSE, Verdi's 1851 tragedy caused one of his many rows with the censors before its Venetian premiere. Following a few minor compromises, the work triumphed locally, then internationally. The score's most celebrated highlights – the Duke's 'Questa o quella' and 'La donna e mobile', Gilda's 'Caro nome', and the famous quartet (which Hugo believed actually improved on his play at that point in the action) – are among the best known set- pieces in all opera. First seen in 2001, David McVicar's production teems with life and colour and, with Tanya McCallin's period costumes and Michael Vale's starkly effective sets, it provides an ideal frame for Verdi's exploration of love, emotional betrayal and the darkest revenge.
